If you're pregnant and considering massage therapy for the first time, it's normal to have questions — is it safe, when can you start, and what actually happens during the appointment. Here's a straightforward answer to each.

Is prenatal massage safe?

Generally, yes. Massage therapy is a commonly recommended part of prenatal care for managing the aches, swelling, and tension that come with pregnancy. That said, every pregnancy is different, and if you have a high-risk pregnancy or specific concerns, it's worth checking with your doctor or midwife before booking, and letting me know about it at your appointment.

When can you start prenatal massage?

Many people start in the second trimester, once early pregnancy symptoms have settled, though it varies. If you're unsure, mention it when you book and we can talk through timing together.

How is positioning handled?

Comfort and safety come first. Depending on the stage of pregnancy, this might mean side-lying positioning with supportive pillows and bolsters, rather than lying flat on your back or stomach. I'll adjust as needed throughout the session, and you're always welcome to ask for changes if something doesn't feel right.

What does a prenatal session focus on?

  • Lower back and hip tension from shifting posture and weight distribution
  • Swelling and discomfort in the legs and feet
  • Shoulder and neck tension, especially later in pregnancy
  • General stress relief — pregnancy is a lot, physically and mentally

Pressure and technique are adapted to what's appropriate and comfortable for you at each stage — this isn't a one-size-fits-all treatment.

What should you bring or do beforehand?

Just come as you are. Before your first visit, you'll fill out a short health history form through Jane App so I have a clear picture of your pregnancy and any concerns going in.
