How Direct Billing Works for Massage Therapy in Ontario

Direct billing is one of the most common questions I get before a first appointment, and for good reason — nobody wants a surprise at the front desk. Here's how it actually works.

What "direct billing" actually means

Instead of paying the full cost yourself and submitting a claim to your insurance provider afterward, direct billing means I submit the claim to your insurance company directly, on the spot. In most cases, you only pay the difference, if any, between what your plan covers and the full cost of the visit — sometimes nothing at all.

Which providers I direct bill

I direct bill to most major insurance providers in Ontario. The one exception right now is Blue Cross — for that one, you'll pay for your visit and I'll give you a detailed receipt to submit yourself, which is usually a quick process through your provider's app or website.

What to check with your plan before you book

• Whether your plan covers registered massage therapy at all (most extended health plans do, but not every plan is the same)
• Your annual maximum for massage therapy, so you know how much coverage you have left for the year
• Whether your plan requires a doctor's referral for massage therapy — some do, most don't
• Whether there's a per-visit maximum, which affects what portion you might pay out of pocket

Your insurance provider's member portal or the phone number on your benefits card is the fastest way to check these details.

What happens at your appointment

When you book, let me know you'd like to direct bill and which provider you're with. After your session, I submit the claim right away — you'll know before you leave whether anything is owing, rather than waiting to find out later.
