Chronic pain is complicated, and no single treatment is a complete answer on its own. What I can offer, as a Registered Massage Therapist, is one part of a broader approach — here's an honest look at where massage therapy fits in.

What counts as chronic pain?

Generally, pain that persists for three months or longer, whether it's tied to a specific condition, an old injury, or no clear single cause at all. It often comes with muscle tension, guarding, and reduced mobility that build up around the original issue over time.

How massage therapy can help

  • Reducing muscle tension and guarding that builds up around chronic pain
  • Improving mobility and range of motion in affected areas
  • Supporting relaxation and reducing the stress response that often makes pain feel worse
  • Giving you consistent, hands-on feedback on how your body is doing over time

What I won't do is promise a cure — chronic pain rarely has one single fix, and I'd rather be upfront about that than oversell what a massage can do.

What a treatment plan looks like

For chronic pain, I typically build a plan around a series of visits rather than a single session, since consistency tends to matter more than any one appointment. We'll talk through what's been going on, what's already been tried, and adjust the approach as we go based on how you're responding.

Working alongside your other care

Massage therapy works best as one piece of a bigger picture — alongside your doctor, physiotherapist, or other care you're already receiving, not as a replacement for it. If something feels outside what massage therapy can appropriately address, I'll say so and point you toward getting it looked at properly.
